Challenges and Opportunities in Forensic Interviewing

Workshop Description:

This workshop will cover a variety of topics which have consistently been asked by learners throughout my own and CornerHouse’s previous training and forensic interviewing experiences. Topics will include barriers identified by the Multidisciplinary team professionals, forensic interviewers and families such as non-disclosure, shutdowns, recantation, worries from families about stranger danger, and a misunderstanding of research updates among others. These barriers will be presented and through the various learning formats, possible options and opportunities will be presented. We will explore these topics through lectures, case studies, learner interactions/group discussions and video examples.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this training, learners will be able to:

  • Incorporate strategies to overcome blocks or barriers in a forensically sound and person-centered manner

  • Critically think before, during and after about whether a block or problem is truly a barrier or an opportunity for our own improvement

  • Be able to identify resources for further research and training opportunities

  • Engage their multidisciplinary team in a better understanding of the strategies and reasoning behind using those strategies
