The Ripple Effects of Violence

The spectrum of violence is quite vast.  The ways in which one person can harm another is limitless.  This presentation will engage the audience in a courageous conversation of abuse and violence across the lifespan and the impact (ripple effects) it leaves on victims, families, the community and our culture at large.  Through 30 years of research on the impact of violence in the lives of children and the adults they go up to be, concurrently with 30+ years of a Child Advocacy Center in Minneapolis, the journey will be shared. In the past 2 years CornerHouse CAC has experienced what we are calling the trifecta; the pandemic, the death of George Floyd and the subsequent social and racial justice protests as well as increased gun violence locally and nationally. This takes a toll on staff, families and healing. Working together our goal is to identity harm and risk, intervene to stop the immediate impact of harm and interrupt the transmission of harm across generations.

Objectives:

  • Engage in a discussion of violence and abuse across the lifespan and the vast impact it leaves.

  • Recognize the vast amount of violent content available and the risk of exposure to younger and younger youth.

  • Identify varying beliefs regarding causes of violence and the impact on victims and survivors.

  • Brainstorm ways and ideas to create these courageous conversations within communities in an effort to prevent all types of violence and abuse and support those currently healing.
