A Guide to Welcoming Students Back to Class: Mitigating the Impact of COVID-19

Emerging from isolation and sheltering at home is an unprecedented event for educators all over the world.  As we continue to learn the impact of Covid-19 on the physical and mental well-being of both adults and youth we must take action to mitigate the negative impact.  Educators, pediatricians and child abuse professionals have been concerned that child abuse is thriving with less eyes on children.  A study from Italy and Spain on the psychological impact of Covid-19 on children and as well as American studies of out of school time will be discussed. Children returning to school provide the opportunity to increase resilience, co and self-regulation skills and stress reduction by providing safe, nurturing and consistent relationships.

Objectives:

  • Recognize the negative impact of Covid-19 on mental health

  • Describe the potential risk factors that some students have been exposed to and subjected to while sheltering at home

  • Identify ways to counteract out of school time

  • Apply measures that will increase social and emotional learning for all students
