Supporting the Non-Offending Caregiver

Description:

Child abuse cases can be heartbreaking and problematic even when the child victim has full support of family.  These cases can become some of our most frustrating when the child is not supported.  Understanding and supporting the non-offending caregiver, sometimes referred to as an overlooked victim, can be challenging for professionals.  This training will help to identify behaviors and circumstances which look to be harmful for the child.  Understanding the reasons and context behind these actions can be critical to a successful case and the well-being of the child.  Engaging and providing support and resources for this parent/caregiver is crucial.

Objectives:  

• Identify the support people and support systems for the child victim

• Recognize the overlooked victims, including the non-offending caregiver as well as non-abused siblings

• Develop engagement tools and strategies for the overlooked victims

• Determine immediate and long-term resources for the non-offending caregiver
