Forensic Interviewing in Physical Abuse Investigations: The ABCs for MDTs (Adaptations, Benefits, and Considerations)
Abstract
In the field of child abuse investigations, methods such as conducting forensic interviews with alleged child victims, using a multidisciplinary team approach, and/or utilizing the services of a children’s advocacy center are fairly standard practice when there are allegations of sexual abuse. When the report is regarding physical abuse, however, the approach to the investigation may be different. This presentation will explore the potential barriers and benefits of using a similar approach when investigating alleged physical abuse as is used in cases of alleged sexual abuse. For those conducting forensic interviews, strategies that can be incorporated into any forensic interview protocol are provided, regarding aspects that may be unique when the report is about physical abuse and approaches that may be employed during the forensic interview.
