Mandated Reporting: Ethical Considerations
Workshop Description:
This workshop will first identify basic mandated reporter laws and who needs to report. A developed protocol will be presented to learners on how to collect minimal facts in order to make this mandated report when child abuse or neglect is suspected to ensure safety of the child while also protecting the integrity of any possible investigation. Many ethical barriers will be discussed and overcome such as if a professional is worried it will damage their relationship with the client, a preconceived notion of what may happen with the report, if duplicate reporting is necessary among others. Discussion will also include possible next steps, how to document a report, safety/ confidentiality laws for mandated reporters and how to address concerns for their own safety.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this training, learners will be able to:
Understand how and when to make a report of child maltreatment
Be able to talk respectfully with a child about concerns you may have
Understand potential barriers and ethical considerations in mandated reporting
Be able to use a documented line of decision making when considering ethical concerns
